Wisdom Cycle
by  j. christina brittain

All things in Nature from atoms to sandstorms to the sun and stars are self-organizing systems continually searching for stability and balance with all things. This search consists of unending sensory cycles of arousal and quiet, compelled by natural sensory wisdom that has evolved over millions of years.

We, as part of Nature, seek this same stability through our innate senses that intuitively know how to enhance harmony and joy in our lives. The wisdom of these senses lays dormant within us until a physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual need arises. When this happens, the Sensory Cycle begins.

A need arouses one of our senses, which then signals our innate wisdom to search for a solution. When we find and apply a solution that fully satisfies the need, fulfillment registers in the aroused sense, assuring it that wellness has been restored. The cycle ends with the sense going dormant again, awaiting the next need.

When we heed genuine solutions and allow them the freedom to satisfy real needs, we are rewarded with enhanced wellness and joy.

Often, however, the false stories modern society has conditioned us to believe lead us to identify false needs to which we apply false solutions or no solutions at all. When this happens, our needs go unfulfilled, often causing so much agitation to the aroused senses that they bombard us with intensified demands for solutions.

We feel this bombardment as stress, and if it persists for a prolonged time, it can cause physical problems, such as insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, and heart disease and/or mental-emotional difficulties, which may include overeating, excessive spending, substance abuse, or even abuse of others or self.

For this reason, it is important that we become consciously aware of our genuine needs, and be certain we are applying genuine solutions to fulfill them. Genuine needs satisfied by genuine solutions are the only trustable path to enhanced and lasting wellness and joy.

HOW WE HEAR

Spoken words enter our brain through the auditory nerve, which crosses the floor of the skull, and enters the brainstem just below the pons.

It is suggested that the auditory nerve is comprised of three distinct pathways into the brain:

  • One hears the ordinary conversations of the world

  • Another connects us to art and learning

  • A third one connects us to inborn wisdom that knows innately what we genuinely need for enhanced wellness and joy.

All three, working in cooperative partnership, can lead us to what we genuinely need for enhanced wellness and joy.

STEPS in the WISDOM CYCLE

Threat
Triggers Need
Arouses Sense
Search for Solution
Fulfillment indicates that wellness has been restored
Sense rests until another Need arises

Imagine that a house fire has broken out in your home. The fire creates a need that arouses a smoke detector, which triggers the search for a solution. When a solution, such as a fire extinguisher, is found and fulfills the need by dousing the flames, the smoke detector stops sounding and goes back to rest.

Similarly, when a threat to your wellness arises, one or more of your senses becomes aroused and sends your innate wisdom out to find solution that will fulfill the need.

Ignoring a smoke detector’s warning about a fire or applying the wrong solution, like trying to put it out with gasoline, can spell disaster. In the same way, if you ignore your needs or attempt to fulfill them with the wrong solutions, your wellness can be harmed or even destroyed.

Our inborn wisdom continually presents genuine solutions to genuine needs, but our separation from Nature has blinded us to them. When we reconnect to this ancient intelligence, we discover how to enhance wellness and joy in all aspects of our lives.

An easy way to depict genuine needs and solutions to those needs is to arrange 5 or more people in a circle, and ask each one to represent something in Nature, such as a bird, soil, water, human, etc. A ball of string, representing genuine needs and solutions to those needs, is then passed from one person to another.

For example, a bird’s sense of hunger registers a need for food that can be fulfilled by insects, so the string is passed from the ‘bird person’ to the ‘bee person.’ The bee’s sense of color registers a need for pollen that can be fulfilled by a flower, so the string is passed from the ‘bee person’ to the ‘flower person.’ The flower’s sense of thirst registers a need for water so the string is passed to the ‘rain person.’ Soon the string connects the needs & healthful solutions of all members of the group.

As everyone begins to enjoy the comfort of their shared connections, one, a scissors is used to sever one, then another connecting string, signifying the loss of each wellness solution. Sadly, as more and more strings are cut, distress is deeply felt by all. The group’s integrity and spirit disintegrate as their wisdom recognizes that both their individual and collective survival is being threatened by the lost solutions.

The false solutions that we often apply to our own genuine needs are more difficult to portray because we have been conditioned to pursue false satisfiers of our needs. For example, we need transportation, but we buy a new car even though the old one runs fine. We need food, but eat even though we’re not hungry. We need clothes, but we buy more while our closets overflow. We need security, but are suspicious of others even when they aren’t threatening us. In each case, we ignore our inborn wisdom that can help us identify real needs, and appease false needs with false satisfiers instead. Is it any wonder we are never satisfied?

The surest way to reconnect to our inborn wisdom that can help us achieve greater wellness and joy is by practicing the Nature-based activities found in Dr. Brittain's book, Arousing Wisdom Within.
